Opening Reception: Broadcasting for Reels: Sounds (Extra)Ordinary
WHEN: Wednesday, February 01, 2012 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
WHERE: Alderney Landing, 2 Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth NS

The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to present Broadcasting for Reels: Sounds (Extra)Ordinary, an audio art presentation on CKDU 88.1 FM broadcasting date February 1st 2012.

Broadcasting For Reels is an audio art exhibition presented annually by the Centre for Art Tapes since 1993. Exhibition curator and host Chris Myhr chose this year’s theme of Sounds (Extra)Ordinary. The international roster of selected artists includes John Abram, Marla Hlady, Francisco Lopez, Rachel Woolmore-Goodwin and John Wynne; as well as collaborative works from Matt Rogalsky and Laura Cameron, and the Audio Lodge collective.

In line with practices of ambient sound design, soundscape recording, and musique concrète, the artists in this series employ audio production technologies as a means of exploring our everyday acoustic environment. The sounds of natural and urban habitats, as well as those of work spaces and machines provide the source material from which these artists facilitate new and expanded listening experiences.

The Centre for Art has partnered with the Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing to install the work in an elevator as a transitory architectural space. The installation will act as a public intervention and be an open place for audience attendees. The opening reception for both the audio installation and radio broadcast will be on February 1st 2012. The opening reception will take place at Alderney Landing from 7-9Pm on February 1st in conjunction with the Craig Gallery’s opening reception of new work by Katie Vautour. All are welcome to attend!

Broadcasting for Reels: Sounds (Extra)Ordinary is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. Centre for Art Tapes would like to acknowledge the support of the Craig Gallery and CKDU fm.

2012 Curators in Residence
Friday, December 16, 2011 10:00 AM - Tuesday, February 01, 2011 10:00 AM
1657 Barrington St. suite 220, Halifax NS
In 2010, the Centre for Art Tapes piloted its first Local Curatorial Residency for local emerging curators specializing in media arts. In this program the Centre supports curators as they uncover the intricacies of building a curatorial project related to the discourse on Media Art and/or its various applications.

Centre for Art Tapes in pleased to announce the 2012 Local Curators in Residence! Ella Tetrault and Bethany Riordan-Butterworth co-founders of the Fuller Terrance Lecture Series; a bi-weekly lecture held in the backyard of 2664 Fuller Terrace in Halifax which celebrates the lives of Halifax’s residents, and is based around the idea of sharing stories and experiences with members of the community.

CFAT is excited at the opportunity to support Ella and Bethany during their residency. As Curatorial Residents, The Fuller Terrace Lecture Series are looking forward to developing a pilot program that explores the strengths, weaknesses and differences of transferring its long lasting lecture format into an online platform.

Ella Tetrault is an interdisciplinary artist living in Canada and Europe. She is currently completing an MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. With a background in participatory theatre and youth work, Ella's previous performances, videos, audio projects, installations and collaborations focused on researching and developing narratives that consider homelessness, place and desire. While in Halifax, Ella co-organizes the Fuller Terrace Lecture Series, teaches at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and works as a youth worker and arts facilitator for Phoenix Youth Programs. She is currently doing small Guerilla performances and making a lot of masked puppets. She grew up in Port Williams, Nova Scotia.

Bethany Riordan-Butterworth is a graduate of a NSCAD (BFA Major in Ceramics 2007). She is currently the Director of Turnstile Pottery Cooperative where she makes ceramic ware and teaches classes. She also teaches at The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the George Dixon Community Centre. Her interest in sharing experiences and getting to know people regularly leads to collaborative work, such as the Fuller Terrace Lecture Series and the Secret Tumbler Project.

3x3x3: David Frankovich Projection & Closing Reception
Thursday, October 27, 2011 7:00 PM - Thursday, October 27, 2011 11:00 PM
Starfish Properties Barrington Buildings & the Khyber
3x3x3: David Frankovich Projection and Closing Reception

Presented by: Centre For Art Tapes, Eyelevel Gallery and Videospread.
Location: Starfish Properties Barrington buildings and the Khyber (closing reception)

Projection: David Frankovich, Plus de Deux (2010)
When: 7-11pm, Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Norman McLaren's Pas De Deux is revisited in video artist David Frankovich’s alternative performance Plus de Deux. The projection is thrown across Barrington Street from the Roy building onto a screen affixed to the exterior wall of a building under construction. Frankovich’s video contains contemporary dancers performing fluid dance movements, broken up through a digital compression technique called “datamoshing”. The frame degrades into a flow of colors; the bodies jump into one another, confusing gender and movement, and bringing the movement of the image to an awkward halt. A broken language is deconstructed visually, reflecting the giant degrading image onto passersby and mimicking a rustic brick façade.

David Frankovich is an emerging Toronto-based artist working in media and performance. He holds a BFA in Film and Video from York University. His work has been exhibited at the CONTACT Photography Festival, FADO Performance Art Centre, Images Festival, LIFT, Nuit Blanche Toronto, Pleasure Dome, Reel Asian, Toronto Urban Film Festival, Trinity Square Video and the Winnipeg Film Group. www.davidfrankovich.com

Closing Reception: Khyber, 1588 Barrington St.
When: 7-11pm, Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Once you have taken a look at the projection come on down to the Khyber for the closing reception of 3x3x3. CFAT will be around to chat about the exhibition. Light refreshments will be served.

This projection is part of a month long program entitled 3x3x3 involving 3 off site projections and a month long exhibition at Eyelevel Gallery 2159 Gottingen Street. The exhibition will be on view from 1-30 October 2011.

Granville Mall Courtyard
Presented by: Videospread, Centre for Art Tapes and Eyelevel Gallery

Michel Klöfkorn N.N (2009)

Spikes to deter birds, so-called pigeon stoppers (wire devices that protect buildings and memorials from pigeons in many cities) are brought to life by stop motion technique. On window ledges and billboards, they metamorphose into swarms of technoid insects made of stainless steel and plastic. This gigantic swarm of insects treks through landscapes and decimates civilization, as we know it, into fragments.

Michel Klöfkorn is an artist with a background in drawing, film history, aesthetics, analog film and digital video. Along with colleague Oliver Husain, he ran a music video production company from 1995 to 2003 that resulted in the production of more than 30 music videos for hit German bands at the time. Between the years 2003 and 2006 Klöfkorn worked as an illustrator and animator for the cultural channel arte in Paris. His productions have ranged from 35mm films with substantial crews, to hand-shot dv-films, to feature film-like projects to documentary and animated films. He is interested in finding new and unusual ways to illustrate music.

3x3x3: Julie Louise Bacon and James Geurts
Saturday, October 01, 2011 7:00 PM - Saturday, October 01, 2011 10:00 PM
South Battery Pier
Presented by: Eyelevel Gallery, the Centre For Art Tapes, and Videospread.
Location: South Battery Pier (on the Halifax Waterfront next the Bishop’s Landing) Time: 7-10pm, Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Julie Louise Bacon and James Geurts, Double Fountain [after a water clock design by the Arab engineer al-Jazari 1136-1206] (2011)

Double Fountain projects an image of a curious device, a contemporary remaking of an ancient invention that uses the flow of water to perform that most human of interests…the measuring of time (so important to maritime navigation we recall). As a temporary installation, it is situated directly on the Halifax Waterfront, where many classic historic monuments, public artworks, architectural development, and tourist attractions are situated. The allusion to Arab engineering (during the Islamic Golden Age), reminds us of a time in history mostly obscured in the West. This recollection comes at a time of resurgency in the Arab world, and charged Arab-West relations. As well as a form of monument, the looped image can act like an altar, the soundtrack become hynoptic even meditative, drawing us into a reflection on the use of public space for the poetic rather than the commercial, and asking the question, what do we choose to memorialise and why?

Julie Louise Bacon (Ph.D) is an artist, curator and writer, focusing on themes including ritual, mythology, aesthetics and politics, technology and consciousness, and archiving. She has presented her research-based performance, installation, Land Art, video and photographic works in galleries and outdoor locations worldwide. Her recent publications and exhibitions include: Convergences: Literary Art Exhibitions (Belfast/Limerick, 2011), Drawing on Thresholds (residency with James Geurts in Israel/Palestine (2011), The Clearing (event curation, London 2010), and Arkive City (Ed. 2008, http://interface.ulster.ac.uk/arkivecity). Julie has played an active role in artist-led culture through posts in arts centres in England, Northern Ireland and Canada, and is currently based in Quebec City.

James Geurts (Australia/Netherlands) has developped an ‘expanded drawing practice’ that involves drawing with traditional materials, as well as with light, sound, photography, Land Art, kinetic sculpture and video. Working in sites ranging from a city harbour and a salt lake in the desert in Australia, to a cultural quarter in China, his events and installations amplify the relationship between form and flux in nature and the built environment, and the experience of the senses and perception in the human body. His recent works include: Drawing Subterranean (Gemak, The Hague 2011); Tract, the Margaret Lawrence Gallery (Melbourne, 2011) ; and Drawing Amplitude (Transpan, The Hague, 2011).

Dalhousie Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue
The Dalhousie Art Gallery is hosting the last of three artist talks organized by the Centre for Art Tapes. The final talk will be given by Halifax Artist, Roberto Santaguida. The talk will take place at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, Tuesday 27 September at 7pm.

Once a year, two local media artists in the HRM are selected to spend 3-4 weeks over the course of 4 months at the Centre for Art Tapes to produce and present their work, teach workshops and meet with the local community. Eleanor King and Roberto Santaguida have been this year’s residents. Roberto’s artist talk will be the culmination of his time as resident.

Roberto Santaguida has been working at the Centre for Art Tapes on the 5-minute documentary Gerrish Lane a continuation of Rob’s previous social documentary work. The video will examine the inner workings of a 35-meter gravel path – perpendicular to Gerrish Street - and its adjacent abandoned lot. His first film Miraslava screened in over 120 international film festivals and received 6 prizes. September Artist Talk Series: Christine Redfern & Caro Caron
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 7:00 PM - Wednesday, September 21, 2011 9:00 PM
Dalhousie Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue
The Centre for Art Tapes and Dalhousie Art Gallery will be co-hosting a talk given by Christine Redfern and Caro Caron on Wednesday 21 September at 7pm at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue.

Redfern and Caron are visiting from Quebec for an Atlantic tour and launch of their book Who is Ana Mendieta? – a graphic novella about the art and life of Ana Mendieta. The book is the first in a series called Blind Spot, published by The Feminist Press, re-introducing women artists and writers to a contemporary audience. This publication casts a glance at the machinations of the art world, looking back in particular to the heyday of the feminist revolution and recounts an iconoclastic biography of the Cuban American feminist artist; bringing new light to her obscured history.

Who is Ana Mendieta? is written by Christine Redfern, illustrated by Caro Caron and includes an introduction by writer and curator Lucy Lippard. The book is produced in both official language and most recently been translated to Spanish.

This artist talk is the second in a series happening throughout September organized by the Centre for Art Tapes and Dalhousie Art Gallery. Following visiting artists Christine Redfern & Caro Caron will be an artist talk by Roberto Santaguida on the 27 September 7pm at the Dalhousie Art Gallery.

All events are free of charge and everyone is welcome. For more information please contact Kristen Atkins, Communications Coordinator at the Centre for Art Tapes, 902-422-6822 or cfat.communication@ns.sympatico.ca

September Artist Talk Series: Eleanor King
Wednesday, September 14, 2011 7:00 PM - Wednesday, September 14, 2011 10:00 PM
Dalhousie Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue
The Centre for Art Tapes and Dalhousie Art Gallery will be co-hosting a talk given by Halifax Artist, Eleanor King. The talk will take place at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, Wednesday 14 September at 7pm.

Once a year, two local media artists in the HRM are selected to spend 3-4 weeks over the course of 4 months at the Centre for Art Tapes to produce and present their work, teach workshops and meet with the local community. Eleanor King and Roberto Santaguida have been this year’s residents. Eleanor’s artist talk will be the culmination of her time as resident.

Eleanor King will be exploring low-fidelity methods for the production of new artworks. She is presenting a radio-based work at Nuit Blanche in Toronto in October, and will be researching and producing micro-watt radio transmitters. She is also investigating stop motion photographic animation using a scanner and an old, worn-out typewriter ribbon. Her work generally aims to examine the everyday and she is currently interested in ideas of the lost, forgotten or obsolete, silence or lack of signal, white noise, static and feedback.

Eleanor King is a Halifax-based, interdisciplinary artist who exhibits and participates in residency programs nationally and internationally, with upcoming projects at Nuit Blanche (Toronto) and Eastern Edge Gallery (NL). Eleanor's site-specific installations are inspired by everyday life and are realized using provisional materials and improvisational methods. Her musical projects include bands House of Lancaster, The Got to Get Got and The Just Barelys. She teaches media arts at NSCAD University and is Exhibitions Coordinator at Anna Leonowens Gallery.

This artist talk is the first in a series happening throughout September organized by the Centre for Art Tapes and Dalhousie Art Gallery. Following Eleanor King’s September 14 talk will be a talk and book launch with visiting artists Christine Redfern & Caro Caron and on 27 September an artist talk by Roberto Santaguida.

This is a free event and everyone is welcome. For more information please contact Kristen Atkins, Communications Coordinator at the Centre for Art Tapes, 902-422-6822 or cfat.communication@ns.sympatico.ca

Lies that Tell the truth: Local Curatorial Residency Inaugural Exhibition
Friday, July 15, 2011 5:00 PM - Friday, August 12, 2011 5:00 PM
Khyber Centre for the Arts - 1588 Barrington St. Halifax
The Centre for Art Tapes and the Khyber Present

In 2010, the Centre for Art Tapes piloted its first Local Curatorial Residency for local emerging curators specializing in media arts. In this program the Centre supports curators as they uncover the intricacies of building a media arts exhibition. The result of this residency will be seen in the inaugural exhibition curated by Suzanne Caines and Claire Hodge titled Lies That Tell The truth, an exhibition scheduled to take place at the Khyber Institute for the Contemporary Arts between 15 July 2011 and 12 August 2011. Lies That Tell The Truth gathers works from 6 artists using various reenactment strategies as the basis for their artwork. The artists are: Adad Hannah (Montreal), Johanna Householder and b.h. Yael (Toronto), Yam Lau (Toronto), Alison Kobayashi (Toronto), Jeanne Ju (Halifax), and Aoife Collins (Ireland).

Over the course of time, some events are viewed as significant enough to be memorialized. These moments in history are often re-enacted by actors who deliberately endeavor to be loyal to the minutest details of the events they perform. The artists in this exhibition constantly negotiate how closely aligned to the original their work will be. Making these choices, the artist becomes a curator of sorts, a curator of their own reenactment. The question remains, what is the relationship between the artistic gesture and the original upon which it is based? Even if an artist chooses not to include an aspect of the original, is it still there? Is it necessary for a visible trace to remain in order for its presence to be felt?

Please join us for the opening of Lies that Tell the truth at 7:00p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 in the Khyber Ballroom (1588 Barrington St.).

The Centre for Art Tapes invites Local Emerging Curators to apply to the second Local Curatorial Residency program, applications will be launched at exhibition opening.

The Centre for Art Tapes is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. CFAT gratefully acknowledges moving sponsor Premiere Van Lines for their generous support.

Locative Media Artist Geoffrey Shea Coming to Halifax
Monday, July 04, 2011 6:00 PM - Friday, July 15, 2011 6:00 PM
Centre for Art Tapes: 1657 Barrington St. Suite 220
The Centre for Art Tapes is offering interested individuals an opportunity to participate in a workshop on Locative Media with CFAT visiting artist Geoffrey Shea. Participants should have some basic knowledge of Locative Media and be able to commit to attend each part of the hands-on workshop at 6:00 pm Thursday July 7th, and during the days of Saturday and Sunday July 9th and July 10th from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

This workshop will introduce strategies for creating artworks controlled by cell phones. By setting up network interfaces, participants will be able to give viewers the option of dialing a phone number and inputting commands through simple key presses. At the other end of the network, video images and sounds will respond. This workshop is ideal for artists who are interested in interactivity and the possibilities that mobile and locative media provide. It will use the VOIP services of Twilio and a pre-programmed Python/CherryPy server. Participants will be encouraged to tweak these, as well as program their final artworks in vvvv (for Windows) or Max/MSP (for Mac). Some familiarity with nodal programming (like Max) will be useful, but working sample programs will be provided that can be adapted by the participants for their own artwork.

Shea will also deliver a public presentation of one of his interactive artworks during an Artist Talk, Friday, July 8th at 6pm in the Khyber’s first floor (1588 Barrington Street).

If you are interested in taking the opportunity to learn more about cutting edge Locative Media, please send a brief letter outlining your interest in the workshop in the body of an email to: cfat.communication@ns.sympatico.ca by 5p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011. The workshop fee is 50$ for members, and 60$ for non-members.

Geoffrey Shea is a media artist with a long history in video and installation. He recently developed cell phone controlled video installations that were shown at the Vancouver Olympics and Nuit Blanche in Toronto. His work is private and often text based, and “stretches between optimism and resignation, hope and despair.” For more information on Geoffrey Shea visit http://geoffreyshea.com/.

Centre for Art Tapes, Special Announcement
Saturday, April 30, 2011 5:00 PM

Dear Centre for Art Tapes Members and Supporters,

For the last 12 years, the Centre for Art Tapes (CFAT) has resided in the CBC building on Sackville Street in Halifax, NS. Recently, the CBC announced that it would be ending leases with non-profit organizations currently based in the radio building on May 31st, 2011. CFAT will continue to act on the Centre's relocation plans that will have our operations moved to a new location, by June 1st, 2011.

The CFAT Board of Directors’ are grateful to the CBC for providing us with a locus from which we have been able to contribute significantly to the enrichment of media arts culture for the last 12 years. The Centre looks forward to partnerships and new collaborations with the CBC in its new home.

The Centre's staff and board have been actively preparing for this imminent move over the past year, and a short-term plan has been devised in the event that a permanent space does not become available. The Centre is considering the option of partnership with other organizations for temporary facilities that would provide working spaces for staff and artists-in-residence. CFAT is fortunate to have strong relationships with local organizations for off-site programming, and our activities will continue as planned and uninterrupted.

A long-term strategy has also been devised to secure a permanent space for CFAT. The Board is considering specific scenarios and will present the most feasible options to our membership at an organized information session to be announced in the coming weeks. It is our hope that members will attend this meeting to share in the making of these important decisions that will shape the future of CFAT.

In an effort to better address evolving member needs, the Board of Directors has been and continues to assess the Centre's facilities. Alongside the Centre's vision, the Board is interested in continuing to improve access to the Centre's activities, as well as find a permanent space in which to grow into an even more dynamic media arts centre for artists, curators and interested individuals to partake.

This is an exciting time at the Centre, and we hope you share our enthusiasm at being able to participate in shaping the future of this respected organization. We are dealing with very significant changes that will undoubtedly benefit from the ideas and contributions of our membership. Please stay posted for the details with regard to the aforementioned information session, and appeals for your participation in the relocation process.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to working with our members to help build a strong future for CFAT in its new home.

Sincerely,

CFAT Board of Directors’

Equipment and Facilities Access Policy
Tuesday, March 01, 2011 9:30 AM
Centre for Art Tapes
The Centre for Art Tapes Board of Directors has approved a new Equipment and Facilities Access Policy. Please make yourself familiar with it. If you have any questions contact Production Coordinator Tom Elliot at cfat.production@ns.sympatico.ca

Equipment and Facilities Access Policy

This policy applies to all users, including those in programs such as Local Artists-In-Residence and Media Scholars, as well as users with Production and Editing memberships. The Centre reserves the right to not support any work that advocates racist, sexist, ageist, or homophobic attitudes, or promotes any other form of social discrimination.

Bookings
In order to access equipment, one must first book it out by contacting a CFAT staff member or designated volunteer. Bookings can be made by phone, email (cfat.production@ns.sympatico.ca) or in person. The CFAT staff member will advise you if the equipment is available for the specific dates requested and confirm the pickup time. Noon is the default earliest pick-up time for equipment. Staff will do what they can to accommodate bookings, but early returns are not always possible and late returns are beyond staff’s control. Bookings made more than three months in advance should be confirmed closer to the booking date.

Mobile production equipment can be booked for a maximum of one week (7 days) at a time, 14 days per month and over 2 weekends per month. In-house equipment and suites can be booked for a maximum of 30 hours per week. Requests for longer bookings must be submitted in writing to the Board of Directors.

As CFAT is closed Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, equipment booked for these days may be picked up on the previous Friday and returned the following Tuesday. CFAT only charges for the days that equipment is used.

When equipment is taken out, staff will fill out a Rental and Responsibility form indicating the exact equipment taken, including additional cables, adapters, etc., and noting any missing or damaged components. The form will state the date and time the equipment is due. The renter will sign the form, including the Project Intent line and indicating the rate at which they will be charged.

The Technical Coordinator may require any user to take a workshop or tutorial before access to a specific piece of equipment is granted if the user is unable to demonstrate sufficient technical competence for the use of that equipment. The renter is responsible for the cost of the tutorial or workshop.

In-House Access
When in-house facilities are used, staff will fill out a half-page Suite Rental and Responsibility form for the renter indicating the facilities and hours used. The renter will sign the form, including the Project Intent line and indicating the rate at which they will be charged. As members may use facilities outside of office hours, these forms may have to be filled out while staff is away. Staff will review the forms the next working day. The forms can be re-used by initialing each of several lines. A new form must be started for each project with a different rate. Members taking part in Scholarships and Residencies, as well as those with Production Memberships, may use the full-page version of this form, as it is simpler for frequent bookings and will help to conserve paper.

Members with Editing Memberships (as well as those participating in special programs such as the Local Artists-in-Residence and Media Scholarship programs) are issued a wand key for 24-hour access to the building. All other members can request access to in-house facilities after staff hours. Such requests must be made in writing to the General Manager one week in advance. Upon receipt and approval of such a request, staff will request a key from the building management and will contact the member to let them know when it is available for pickup. Members must sign out the key on the Rental and Responsibility form and return the key during staff hours.

Members working in suites during regular staff hours may request that they be added to a security list in order to continue working after the office closes. This request must be made to a staff member who will contact the building security during regular office hours. Members working after hours without building keys are responsible for making arrangements with security to re-enter the building if they have to leave for any reason (for example, security staff may be on rounds when a member returns). Members are also responsible for making sure all doors are locked when they leave.

Punctuality
If you have a suite booked and do not show up within twenty minutes of your scheduled start time or contact staff to let them know you will be late, you forfeit your booking in that suite. The fee for non-cancellation or late cancellation of a suite booking is $30 or the rental fee (whichever is lower). This is so that the maximum suite availability can be ensured for members during regular office hours when technical support is available.

Returning Equipment
Equipment must be returned before noon on the return date. To extend the length of a booking, contact staff by phone or in person during regular hours. The staff member will check to make sure the equipment is available, and, if so, extend the booking.

Equipment must be returned to CFAT staff during regular hours. It must be returned in the condition in which it was received, including cables properly wound and batteries recharged. A staff member will check off the equipment as well as sign the Rental and Responsibility form indicating that all equipment has been returned and checked.

Users must pay for equipment upon return. CFAT accepts cash or cheque payments, and can issue an invoice. All invoices must be paid within thirty days.

Mobile Equipment Cancellations and Late Fees
Cancellations must be done in person, by email (cfat.production@ns.sympatico.ca) or by phone 24 hours before pickup time. As CFAT is closed Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, staff will receive messages concerning Tuesday bookings on Tuesday morning. If equipment is not picked up and a cancellation notice has not been given 24 hours in advance, CFAT will charge the member a fee equal to half of one day’s rate for the equipment booked.

If mobile equipment is returned late and no prior arrangements have been made with CFAT staff, CFAT will charge one half the daily rate* for returns made on the day the equipment was due. After that, CFAT will charge twice the daily rate on each successive day until the equipment is returned, regardless of whether the equipment is used or not on those days. Excessive or frequent late returns of equipment will result in the review of access status by the Equipment and Access Committee.

*Production Members will be charged according to the Member Rate.

Rental Rates
CFAT charges rental fees based on type of membership as well as type of project. When equipment or suite time is rented, members must fill out the “Project” intent line on the Rental and Responsibility form and agree on the rate that will be charged for that rental.

There are four rates:
• Member Rate - This applies to projects where an Individual member holds the copyright for and has creative / editorial control over the project. The work must be non-commercial in intent. This rate also applies to members working on collaborative projects and / or assisting with or documenting for a third party on non-commercial work.
• Non-Member Rate - This rate applies to projects where an individual (Associate member or non-member) holds the copyright for and has creative / editorial control over the project. The work must be non-commercial in intent.
• Organizational Rate - This rate applies to projects commissioned by non-profit organizations where the organization holds the copyright for the work.
• Commercial - This rate applies to projects commissioned by a business or for-profit organization, or to projects where the intent is to make money (including marketing, to increase productivity in the workplace, etc.).

Please note that Associate Members do not get discounted rates on equipment, facilities or workshops. They pay at non-member rates.

In cases where members with Production and Editing Memberships are doing work of a non-commercial nature for a third party, a rate equal to half the Individual Member rate must be paid for mobile equipment (in the case of Production Memberships) or suite rental (in the case of Editing Memberships). In the case of commercial work, the full Commercial rate will apply.

Equipment Responsibility
It is the sole responsibility of the renter to test all equipment, ensuring proper functioning. Renters must report loss, damage or malfunction of equipment immediately to CFAT staff. No renter may dismantle, re-configure, repair or modify any of the equipment or facilities. Doing so will result in the review of access status by the Equipment and Access Committee.

Members are responsible for any costs incurred due to loss, theft or damage caused while equipment is in their possession. When signing out equipment, members agree to the following condition listed on the Rental and Responsibility form:

I understand that I am the only person who will be responsible for the use and transportation of this equipment and I may not delegate these responsibilities to anyone else. I will not use the equipment in any way that contravenes the criminal code.

As the person who signs the form is solely responsible for the equipment (there is no off-site insurance), members are strongly encouraged to pick up and return their own equipment.

The renter has full responsibility of ensuring the legality and safety of the procedures and materials used in any production or representation using CFAT facilities or equipment. The renter agrees to indemnify CFAT for any claims from third parties.

Credits for Productions
CFAT requires that credits for any production made with its equipment include recognition for the use of CFAT facilities and / or equipment. The CFAT logo is available for download from our web site at www.centreforarttapes.ca in the “Contact” section. Appearance of the logo is only required for productions made as part of CFAT programs (such as Residencies and Scholarships); for other projects, a text credit is sufficient. Producers are encouraged to submit a copy of the work for inclusion in the CFAT archive.

Tape Stock
CFAT stocks an assortment of mini-DV and Betacam SP tapes as well as DVDs and CDs. Simply let a CFAT staff member know what you will need and when and we will try to have them available for you. Tape stock must be paid for immediately on receipt.

Computer Storage
As CFAT is a shared environment with limited hard drive capacity, we encourage users to back up their projects to their own media and delete them promptly when they are completed. Please be efficient regarding hard drive storage on CFAT computers.

CFAT is not responsible for backing up projects stored on the Media Drives, and assumes no responsibility or liability for loss or damage to projects in the case of hardware failure or human error.

Users may not store anything on the main system drive of the computers. This includes the desktop and the “documents” folder. Instead, create a folder on the secondary “Media Drive” with your name and store all media there. Any data left on the main hard drives may be erased without warning.

Projects left on the Media Drives may be deleted after 60 days of inactivity. Deleting will be done periodically to ensure members have sufficient working space.

Approved by Centre for Art Tapes’ Board of Directors January 10, 2011.

Isabelle Dehay Artist Talk
Friday, December 03, 2010 7:30 PM
CBC Radio Room. 1599 South Park St. Halifax.
The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to collaborate with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Embassy of France to host an Artist Talk by French artist Isabelle Dehay. Please join us for a presentation of a multi-disciplinary practice as the artist delves into her film, video and performance art, discusses arts and culture in France, and about her first Canadian exhibition at the AGNS. Artist Talk: 7:30p.m. December 3rd in the CBC Radio Room, 1599 South Park St. Refreshments will be served.

Isabelle Dehay is here for the opening of The Last Frontier at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia presents The Last Frontier, a remarkable exhibition examining the tension between nature, culture, technology, and the built environment through works of art.

Once regarded as a permanent paradise, the “natural” world has become an elusive last refuge of the wild. Faced with globalization, oil spills, overbuilding and overpopulation, artists have—over time—documented and also recreated their environments. Where artists once recorded their pristine surroundings, now advances in technology allow for fabrication of that open, infinite universe.

The Last Frontier, curated by Sarah Fillmore, features works by 12 renowned artists representing three countries – Canadians Vikky Alexander, David Askevold, Iain Baxter&, Mark Bovey, Ed Burtynsky, Erik Edson, Holly King, Kelly Richardson, and Tom Sherman, American Alan Sonfist, plus France-based Isabelle Dehay and duo Scenocosm.

The Last Frontier is proudly presented by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in partnership with Halifax Regional Municipality and Centre Culturel français|French Embassy in Canada with additional support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

The exhibition opens Friday, December 3 at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

The Last Frontier runs until April 26, 2011.

Broadcasting For Reels is an audio art exhibition presented annually by the Centre for Art Tapes since 1993. Exhibition curator and host Lucas Dambergs chose this year’s theme of Success Through Failure. About the theme, Lucas states “Sometimes you can't do something right without doing it wrong. A mistake can be an unplanned act of genius. Getting hopelessly lost can set you on the right path.”

Artists included in Broadcasting for Reels were selected from an open submission call and are from across Canada and beyond. They include Allison Maletz (Brooklyn, NY), Andi Chapple (Sedbergh, UK), Anne-François Jacques (Montreal, PQ), Blanca Rego Constela (Barcelona, Spain), Daniel Blinkhorn (Sydney, Australia), Emma Hendrix (Vancouver, BC), Graham Dunning (Manchester, UK), Lisa Folkerson (Halifax, NS), Lukas Pearse (Halifax, NS), Marinos Koutsomichalis (York, UK), Pudy Tong (Scarborough, ON), Victoria Fenner (Hamilton, ON), Yota Morimoto (Den Haag, The Netherlands), and Zoë Solomon (Toronto, ON).

The Good Food Emporium (2179 Gottingen St.) and Uncommon Grounds (1030 South St.) will be open during the broadcast to provide listeners a comfortable listening environment while enjoying some coffee, tea and baked goods. As well, CFAT staff will be on hand at these venues during the broadcast to hand out exhibition programs and answer questions.

Artist Talk by CFAT Local-Artist-in-Residence Sebastian Harder
Thursday, October 28, 2010 6:30 PM - Thursday, October 28, 2010 8:00 PM
CBC Radio Room. 1599 South Park St. Halifax.
The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to present an artist talk by CFAT Local-Artist-In-Residence Sebastian Harder, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 28, 2010, in the CBC Radio Room, 1599 South Park St.

Sebastian Harder, a graduate of the NSCAD University BFA Program, has been working over the past five years on his project Under the Volcano, a short fictional narrative that explores being stuck in an untenable situation. Such a situation can feel familiar and in some ways comfortable - at least in the short term. The work explores the limits of the control that we can exert over our environment, and the sometimes-absurd ways in which we are forced to adapt.

Sebastian will present a rough cut of Under the Volcano and talk about his experiences working on this project through the CFAT Local-Artist-In-Residence program. The work is slated to be finished by the spring of 2011.

Centre for Art Tapes’ Local Artist-In-Residence Program provides opportunities to local media artists for the development and experimentation of new work involving audio, video, or new media. Twice a year, a local Media Artist is selected to spend 3-4 weeks at the Centre for Art Tapes to produce and present their work, teach workshops and meet with the local community. The next deadline for applications is November 5, 2010.

Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, 2010 in the CBC Radio Room (1599 South Park St.) for Sebastian Harder’s presentation of his work-in-progress Under the Volcano. This event is free of charge. Refreshments will be served.

CFAT’s Local Artist-In-Residence Program is supported by the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

I/O
Saturday, October 16, 2010 7:00 PM - Saturday, November 27, 2010 7:00 PM
Eyelevel Gallery. 2063 Gottingen St.
The Centre for Art Tapes and Eyelevel Gallery are pleased to present I/O, an exhibition of electronic art at Eyelevel Gallery. Opening as part of Nocturne 2010, 6 p.m Saturday, October 16. A closing reception will take place 6 p.m. Thursday, November 25.

In the catalogue essay, Media Lab Instructor and artist Adam Kelly explains “the title of the exhibition, I/O, stands for "input/output", a term used in electronics and computing to refer to communication between an information processing system, such as an integrated circuit or a computer, and its users, its peripherals, other information processing systems, or the environment.”

This exhibition showcases artworks completed through the Centre for Art Tapes' Electronic Art Residency Program since its inception in 2008, and includes works by 2008-2009 residents Wes Johnston, Lukas Steinman, and Chantal Tardiff, as well as 2009-2010 residents Chris Myhr, Amélie Proulx, William Robinson, and Scott Saunders.

In its short three-year history, the Centre for Art Tapes' Electronics Lab and the Electronic Art Residency Program has paved a solid path for artists to meet with other artists who are interested in professional development in electronic media. The Lab, originally funded as a one-time project, has developed into a reoccurring activity and a successful community program.

Perhaps saying that the Lab and Residency have paved a path is a narrow descriptor for such a creative space. It may be more appropriate to describe the platform offered to these artists as a transient intersection where low and high technologies meet [or are re-configured]. In I/O, technology materializes, interacts, and disintegrates using forms ranging from kinetic to sculptural to ephemeral, and will foreground process as experimentation.

Kelly further explains “Technological ideology values qualities such as practicality, objectivity, expediency, efficiency, resolution, and reason. In diametric opposition, art has the potential to hold qualities such as impracticality, subjectivity, ambiguity, ambivalence, irresolution, and intuition.”

The Electronics Lab is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and the CBC. Additional support for the Lab and this exhibition was provided by HRM.

I/O opens as part of Nocturne 2010 6 p.m. Saturday October 16 at Eyelevel Gallery, 2063 Gottingen Street. There will be a closing reception, with the artists an curator present, 6 p.m. Thursday November 25. All are invited to attend.

DAMMSel Day: An engaging locative media project in downtown Dartmouth
Sunday, September 12, 2010 2:00 PM - Saturday, October 30, 2010 5:00 PM
Alderney Gate Public Library in the Helen Creighton Room
The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to present a preview of Léola LeBlanc’s locative media project DAMMSel Day 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 12 at the Alderney Gate Public Library. This project was created through the 2010 CFAT Local Artist-In-Residence Program.

The Local Artist-In-Residence Program provides opportunities to local media artists for the development and experimentation of new work involving audio, video, or new media. Twice a year, a local Media Artist is selected to spend 3-4 weeks at the Centre for Art Tapes to produce and present their work, teach workshops and meet with the local community.

DAMMSel Day is a locative media art project in Dartmouth that asks participants to set out on foot with a mobile phone and listen to a fictional narrative while being guided through paths, parking lots, cemeteries, and sidewalks. Designed as an audio walk using location-aware technology to annotate the urban landscape, DAMMSel Day features audio segments which intertwine with wandering and observation. 7scenes, a free application that runs on iPhone and some Nokia smartphones, reads the users location from GPS and triggers recordings when the user approaches pre-determined markers along the route.

Through collaboration with the Dartmouth Heritage Museum, LeBlanc selected artifacts from their archives to activate DAMMSel Day. The work aims to engage the material history of Dartmouth in an innovative way that infuses the static, determined quality of the historical artifact with a sense of possibility and play. DAMMSel Day means to investigate where we stand currently, between history and development, by interrogating the sanctity of the historical space with a conceptual and whimsical approach.

Join us at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 12, in the Helen Creighton Room at the Alderney Gate Public Library for a preview presentation of DAMMSel Day. Léola LeBlanc will present her project and talk about the process involved in using this innovative technology. This event is free of charge and refreshments will be served. Bring your iPhone and earphones if you have them. A limited number of devices will be available for use.

After the September 12th preview, interested participants can access DAMMSel Day from the main floor of Alderney Landing where Léola LeBlanc will have a designated information booth three days a week starting September 15th until the end of October, on Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 4pm and Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. To reserve an iPhone call 476-6670. DAMMSel day is open and accessible to anyone with an iPhone, 3Gs or iPhone 4, and earphones and will be available to experience indefinitely. Check out www.leolaleblanc.com for further information.

Vessels: Prototype Demonstration
Monday, August 16, 2010 4:00 PM - Monday, August 16, 2010 5:00 PM
Halifax Public Gardens
Vessels: Prototype Demonstration
Monday, August 16th at 4:00pm. Public Gardens pond near the Spring Garden and South Park entrance (small pond with the bridge)

Samual St-Aubin, Sofian Audrey, Adam Kelly and Stephen Kelly have been in the Centre for Art Tapes Electonics Lab all week working on their collaborative electronics project "Vessels" to be presented at Nocturne in October. This Monday, August 16th at 4:00pm they will be presenting a prototype that will be used to develop multiple vehicles to be presented during Nocturne. Please meet at in the Public Gardens at the pond with the bridge near the south east side of the gardens where the demonstration will take place. The artists will be present to talk about the project and answer any questions you may have.

Project Description:
Vessels will be an outdoor installation consisting of two groups of autonomous nocturnal water vehicles. Each group will live in a different bed of water. During the day, the vehicles will remain inactive as they gather and store energy from the sun. At night, they will become active when they will collect, store, and interpret data from various environmental conditions such as water quality and temperature. From simple programmed correlations between sensors and actuators, a complex and unpredictable behaviour will emerge that will signify unseen characteristics of the environment and thus potentially provide new insights into the surroundings. Furthermore, stored data may be later used to analyze local environmental conditions.

Nina Levitt: Little Breeze
Saturday, March 06, 2010 7:00 PM - Sunday, April 11, 2010 7:00 PM
Saint Mary's University Art Gallery
Opening Reception: Friday, 5 March, 8:00 pm
Artist’s Talk: Saturday, 6 March, 3:00 pm

Heroism, mystery and danger – the elements of a World War II adventure movie appear this March and April in a beautiful and evocative art installation. Just in time for International Women’s Day, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery presents the interactive media installation, Little Breeze. Toronto-based artist Nina Levitt places conventional narrative elements in a critical context, as they relate to the lives of women and the way they are, or are not, represented in mainstream media.

Originally produced in co-production with Alberta’s Banff Centre, Little Breeze employs visual motifs familiar from adventure and spy films. Where we are used to seeing men in the heroic roles, Levitt has focussed on women, incorporating material from the lives of women who worked in intelligence during World War II, as undercover agents behind enemy lines. Levitt raises questions about how we construct history and remember the past.

Entering the Main Gallery, a visitor sees a projection of numeric ASCII code that resolves itself into a series of images of women. The use of digital data recalls the pivotal role of code-breaking during World War II in the development of the modern computer. A collection of suitcases are strewn about the gallery floor: when visitors pick one up, it triggers a sound clip from Carve Her Name with Pride, a film about British secret agent Violette Szabo. The Side Gallery features a second installation and a text-based work, Service Records, appears in the Library and Atrium elsewhere on campus.

Nina Levitt has worked with photography and video for twenty years. Her work is primarily concerned with the absence of women from visual culture and often relies on the recovery and manipulation of existing images. An Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at York University, Levitt has exhibited internationally and been widely published and reviewed. More information about her work can be found at www.ninalevitt.com.

Caustic Assets
Thursday, October 22, 2009 8:00 PM - Sunday, November 29, 2009 5:00 PM
Dalhousie Art Gallery, Dalhousie University, 6101 University Ave. Halifax.

Caustic Assets - Dalhousie Art Gallery. Opening Reception Thursday October 22 at 8pm. Show runs October 23 to November 29, 2009.

The Centre for Art Tapes in partnership with the Dalhousie Art Gallery presents Caustic Assets, a screening of nine videos from across Canada and abroad, in the New Media Gallery at the Dalhousie Art Gallery. An opening reception will take place 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 22 October. This event is free and open to the public.

The theme of Caustic Assets relates to questions of the recent and continuing economic crisis and its effects on society as it relates to job security and the continuation of a capitalist ideology that does not guarantee freedom from want and violence.

“The money’s run out. So what have we bought? What assets did we accrue? Just how far have we extended ourselves?” asks Léola Le Blanc in the curatorial essay written to accompany this exhibition. Léola continues, “The video selection in Caustic Assets comments on the tragic repercussions we are left to manage after our asset hungry gluttony has abated… What we are witnessing now is the payback of debts in the form of unemployment, status inequality, exploitation, homelessness, hunger, riots and ecological disruption.” The nine videos included in this exhibition give voice to these concerns of our times.

Artists included in this exhibition are: Pascal Lièvre (Paris, France), Anne Walk (Vancouver, BC), Les Newman (Winnipeg, MB), Lansing Bruce Robertson (Winnipeg, MB), Rita Mabel Maio and Franca Gonzalez (Buenos Aries, Argentina), Marik Boudreau (Montreal, QC), Rick Fisher (Winnipeg, MB), Gabriela Golder (Buenos Aries, Argentina), and Karen Zalamea (Montreal, QC).

Caustic Assets is on view Tuesdays through Fridays, 11:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m. at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue, Halifax. The exhibition continues to 29 November. Admission to the gallery is free

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 1723 Hollis Street, Halifax.

The Artifact Institute is wrapping up a three month long project concerned with electronic equipment discarded by arts and cultural organizations in the HRM.

A free closing reception for the project will take place on August 29 from 10AM to 5PM at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

The reception offers an opportunity for people to see how technologies involved in the making of media arts have changed over time. Adam Kelly and Tim Dallett of the Artifact Institute will be available to answer questions regarding the project.

A wide variety of electronic equipment no longer used by organizations such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Centre for Art Tapes, and the now defunct Khyber Digital Media Centre are on view, some of which were once very common and others that were rarely seen outside of specialized professional settings. This project will be of interest to people curious about the history of technology, electronics recycling, and new forms of contemporary art practice.

Admission to the reception and the Artifact Institute space is free (though not to the rest of the AGNS). Please come to the AGNS Admissions Desk and ask to visit the Artifact Institute reception.

Sadie Benning film screening (Part 2)
Thursday, June 18, 2009 9:00 PM
Windsor Theatre, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Bedford Row and George Street Entrance

A compilation of Benning’s later pixelvision works from 1991-1992 (running time 49min.) Free Admission

Volume Two includes the pixelvision works made in 1992: A Place Called Lovely, It Wasn't Love, and Girlpower. A Place Called Lovely references the types of violence individuals find in life, from explicit beatings, accidents, and murders to the more insidious violence of lies, social expectations, and betrayed faith. Benning collects images of this socially-pervasive violence from a variety of sources, tracing events from childhood—movies, tabloids, children's games (like mumbledy-peg)—personal experiences, and those of others. Throughout, she uses small toys as props and examples, handling and controlling them the way we are in turn controlled by larger, violent forces.

In It Wasn't Love, Benning illustrates a lustful encounter with a "bad girl" through the gender posturing and genre interplay of Hollywood stereotypes—posing for the camera as the rebel, the platinum blonde, the gangster, the 50s crooner, and the heavy-lidded vamp. Cigarette poses, romantic slow dancing, and fast-action heavy-metal street shots propel the viewer through the story of the love affair. Benning's video goes farther than romantic fantasy—describing other facets of physical attraction including fear, violence, lust, guilt, and total excitement. As Benning puts it: "It wasn't love, but it was something."

Sadie Benning film screening (Part 1)
Thursday, June 11, 2009 8:00 PM
Windsor Theatre, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Bedford Row and George Street Entrance

A compilation of Benning’s early pixelvision works from 1989-1990. (running time 35min.)

Sadie Benning is a lesbian videomaker who began making videos when she was 15 years old, using a Fisher Price Pixelvision toy camera. Benning's early works were made in the privacy of her childhood bedroom, using scrawled and handwritten text from diary entries to record thoughts and images that reveal the longings and complexities of a developing identity. Evoking in turn playful seduction and painful honesty, Benning's floating, close-up camera functions as a witness to her intimate revelations, and as an accomplice in defining her evocative experimental form. Her work emerges from a place half-innocent and half-adult—with all the honesty, humor, and desperation of a personality just coming into self-awareness, trapped and uneasy. Her more recent work moves beyond the Pixelvision camera and into animation and film.

Living Cinema presents Special Forces
Friday, April 03, 2009 7:00 PM
North Street Church, 5657 North St, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Special Forces is Living Cinema’s new piece. It was inspired by the bombing of Lebanon at the summer of 2006. After a few presentations as a work in progress, it was premiered in Beirut in April 2007 as a part of the Irtijal festival of experimental music.

Right from his first film in 1962, Pierre Hubert has been experimenting with the animation technique of engraving images directly on 16mm or 35mm processed black film. In the eighties, he has developed a new type of performance involving animation scratched directly on a film loop while it is rolling in a projector. He is currently expanding this live animation practice with the use of computers in the Living Cinema project along with composer Bob Ostertag.

Presented in partnership with the 2009 Halifax Independent Film Festival (HIFF).

Graeme Patterson - CFAT Artist in Residence
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - Friday, April 17, 2009

"Grudge Match" project residency

My focus at CFAT for this month will be to record and edit in 5.1 surround sound for a 3:30 min stop-motion animation. The animation entitled "Grudge Match" depicts myself and a long lost childhood friend Yuki wrestling in a high school gym. Based on my own experience from wrestling in high school this piece intends to explore the connections and feelings related to a childhood friendship. "Grudge Match" will be part of a sculptural installation and will be projected as 1080p video. The audio component I will be producing at CFAT is primarily foley. I will record this content myself perhaps in a school gym with the same acoustics as the highschool gym depicted in the video. A basic music track may accompany this audio track in the background as a bridge to suggesting more than the visual allows.

Graeme will be available for studio visits during the following times:
March 24th - April 17th
Tuesday-Friday 10am-noon 1pm-4pm(unless recording off site)
Meeting day - Fridays 1pm-4pm
