The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to present Out of the Centre: CFAT Media Arts Scholarship Program Screening, an annual event in its twenty-third year. The Scholarship Program gives local artists the chance to explore for the first time an aspect of media art such as video production, audio recording, animation, or interactive technologies. The six month long program includes a series of workshops and one-on-one mentorship from an established media artist for each participant.
The artists included in the screening are Susan Feindel, Karen Hawes, Ruth Marsh, Shauntay Grant, Eric Stotts, Sarah Burwash, Ellen Murphy and Lorraine Field. All ticket proceeds go towards the next year's scholarship program. Spread the word and help keep this educational program thriving!
The Media Arts Scholarship Program is support by the National Film Board, The Nova Scotia Film Corporation, Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Communities, Culture and Heritage.

This workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of electricity and electronics. It will cover basic theory and components, and participants will learn how to build an electronic circuit that can flash LEDs, generate a tone, respond to sensors, and activate motors.
Monday, February 20th, 1pm – 5pm
HTML5 and CSS3
Lukas Steinman
This workshop will introduce participants to HTML and CSS, the core building blocks of the web. Participants will learn how to build, design, and customize webpages, manage a custom domain, and make and host search-engine friendly online websites. Emphasis will be placed on visual presentation and experimentation.

Javascript Programming

This workshop will introduce participants to Javascript, the programming language that powers the modern web. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Javascript programming and use powerful open-source libraries to make webpages dynamic, interactive, and animated. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of HTML and CSS.

Arduino

This workshop will introduce participants to Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping and physical computing platform. It will cover the fundamentals of microcontrollers and computer programming for sensing and control applications, and participants will learn how to sense the environment with various sensors as well as control lights, motors, and other actuators. Processing

This workshop will introduce participants to Processing, an open-source programming language and environment. It will cover the fundamentals of computer programming for graphics, video, and audio applications, and participants will learn how to manipulate data in real-time to create emergent and interactive works. Circuit Bending

Circuit-bending is the creative short circuiting of consumer grade instruments and toys to create unique electronic instruments. This simple method requires little to no electronics skills and opens up a wide and strange world of sounds. In this workshop you will see a variety of circuit bent examples, learn a variety of methods, a small amount of history, important guidelines, and helpful shortcuts. We will bend an instrument together and I will assist anybody that brings their own instruments to play with.

Locative Media
Leola Leblanc
Locative Media explores the relationship between urban space and media using networked mobile devices like smartphones. It allows us to augment our surrounding spaces with audio, image or video by creating media and ‘dropping’ that media in urban environments that include private and public spaces. Students will learn about the city in new ways that connect past and present while developing skills to engage their city by creating invisible digital spaces that can be experienced and accessed sonically, visually, and by foot through the use of mobile technology that has either a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

Introduction to Lighting

This workshop will introduce participants to the subjective and objective elements of lighting and exposure - why considerations of lighting and exposure still matter even when using the latest High definition formats. It will cover various techniques and various equipment, and participants will have the opportunity to use CFAT's compliment of lighting and grip equipment.

Personal Documentary

This workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanics involved in making a first-person personal documentary. Through a five-step process, participants will be helped to discover the cinematic equivalent for their ideas and for topics with which they are concerned. Participants will develop their own unique conceptual and production approach by the end of the workshop.

This workshop will introduce participants to DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) video production. It will cover the use of the Panasonic Gh2 and the Ninja Pro Rez recorder.

This workshop is a hands on approach to the fundamentals of stop motion animation. Explore various techniques that can be used with any still camera.

This workshop will introduce participants to Adobe Premier. Participants will be shown through the Premier workflow and will learn skills to be able to realize a variety of video projects.

After Effects

This workshop will introduce participants to After Effects, the industry standard for creating motion graphics and visual effects for film and video. Whether you need a simple animated title sequence, colour correction, or an advanced composite involving hundreds of different layers and effects, After Effects can do it.
